Who are the partners in the business?
Malcolm Hutchinson is a Social Entrepreneur and Alex Stobart is a Chartered Accountant. In addition, the company has a number of highly experienced tutors who teach the full range of courses offered by Enterprising Scotland.
What courses are available from Enterprising Scotland and when?
Enterprising Scotland is approved by the Chartered Management Institute to deliver the following courses:
- Level 2 Introductory Certificate in Team Leading – This course has been developed for people who are considering a move into a role as team leader or those who are new to such a role.
- Level 3 Introductory Certificate in Management – This course is designed for supervisors and first line managers, or those who wish to move into a supervisory or first line management role, and support the development of their skills as a team manager.
- Level 3 Introductory Certificate in Business Start-up – This course is ideal if you have always thought about running your own business but never knew how to get things started or if you have recently set up your own business but want help to get things moving.
- Level 4 Introductory Diploma in Management – If you want the edge in management or you need to boost your career prospects, then this course is ideal for you.
- Level 5 Award in Management Coaching and Mentoring – This course is ideal for the manager, or the aspiring manager who wishes to learn about the practice of management coaching and mentoring, in order to develop their staff.
- Level 7 Introductory Executive Diploma in Management – This course is designed for those who are considering a move into a senior management role or those who are new to such a role.

How is each course delivered?
Each course is delivered on a flexible learning basis and runs throughout the year. Each candidate will be given a comprehensive set of courses notes, which can be studied on a distance learning basis if desired. In addition each candidate will be give the course assessment at the start of each course plus a CD consisting of a set of information booklets on a range of management, leadership and enterprise subjects. There are also a series of optional tutorials available as either 2 one day workshops or as 4 evening workshops.
The assessment for each course will consist of a series of up to 8 questions, which will require an answer of around 400 to 500 words. All the information required to answer the questions will be contained within the courses notes and the accompanying CD.
How do the course notes come?
All course notes will be posted out to candidates by recorded delivery. Each pack of notes will be contained within a large ring binder folder which will be yours to keep. In addition, there will be addition selected list of booklets, contained on a CD, on enterprise, leadership and management from the Charted Management Institute. In addition, a paper copy of the course assessment will be included in the pack along with your welcome letter, which will also contain details of how you contact your course tutor.
When will I find out who my course tutor will be and how do I contact them?
When you receive your course material pack, you will also be given the contact details for your course tutor. You will be able to email any questions that you might have to your course tutor, with all questions being responded to within 24 hours.
Where will the optional workshops be held?
Enterprising Scotland works with a number of partner colleges, so anyone enrolling for a course will be advised where their nearest workshops will be held. At the present time though, the Enterprising Scotland is only able to provide workshops in Edinburgh. Candidates who are unable to travel to Edinburgh for the workshops will be given additional tutor support if required.
How long can I take to complete any of the Enterprising Courses?
You can take as little or as long as you like to complete each course? Some people have been known to complete a course in 4 weeks, however most will take 3 to 4 months. The Chartered Management Institute registration only lasts for 12 months, so it is recommended that any course should be completed in no longer than 12 months, otherwise the Chartered Management Institute Registration fee will need to be paid again by the Candidate. Typical Chartered Management Institute Registration fees are £65.
What if I fail the assessment?
After you have received feedback from the Chartered Management Institute examiner, you can re-submit your assessment for marking, however you will be personally liable for an additional £10 examination fee.
When will I find out if I have passed my assessment?
Normally, the Chartered Management Institute will write to you within 4 weeks of you submitting your assessment to let you know if you have passed or not. Within a further 4-6 weeks, you should receive in the post, your course certificate from the Chartered Management Institute.
How much does each course cost and why is it so cheap?
Each course costs £245, which includes tuition, course materials and the Chartered Management Institute Registration and Examination fees. Enterprising Scotland was established to provide a range of cost effective educational courses that would be affordable by everyone within Scotland. Other UK based providers charge up to £2,600 for the same courses.
Can I use my ILA Scotland account to finance a course with Enterprising Scotland?
Unfortunately, Enterprising Scotland is unable to accept ILA payments at the moment. However, it is anticipated that we will be able to accept ILA payments from the £200 accounts within the next 6 months.
Who is eligible for a discount on the course fees?
A discount of £45 is available for students, the unemployed and those on low incomes. In order to qualify for the discount, it will be necessary to include, with the Enterprising Scotland enrolment form, a copy of a bursary letter or letter from an educational institution stating that you are a student, or a photocopy of a UB40 or equivalent if you are unemployed, or a photocopy of a pay statement to show that you are on a low income.
Are there any other discounts available for the course fees or payment schemes that I could use?
In order to keep course fees to a minimum, Enterprising Scotland can only accept full payment from anyone who wishes to undertake a course. Employers may also pay for their staff to complete one of the Enterprising Scotland courses, however all fees must be paid in full before the course commences.
Is VAT payable on any of the course fees?
At the moment, VAT is not payable on any of the courses provided by Enterprising Scotland.
When will I know if I have been enrolled on my chosen course?
When you have returned your course enrolment form and your payment for the course has cleared, you will receive an email confirming that you have successfully enrolled on your chosen course.
Do any of the courses ever become oversubscribed?
Enterprising Scotland will endeavour to always ensure that anyone who applies for a particular course is accepted for that course. If there are a large number of applications for a particular course, it may take up to 28 days for you to receive your course materials.
Who is the head on the logo of Enterprising Scotland?
The logo features a coin minted Alexander the Great. He is the one shown wearing a lion skin on the coin. Alexander the Great was one of the most charismatic leaders of his time and typifies the leadership and management qualities that Enterprising Scotland want to teach to the people of Scotland.
Whereabouts in Edinburgh is Enterprising Scotland based?
Enterprising Scotland works from a number of college locations in Scotland. The main company office is based at The Melting Pot in Rose Street in the heart of Edinburgh. Because most of our team are continually out delivering training, you would need to make an appointment to meet one of our staff, as there may not be anyone available if you turn up at our offices unannounced.
If I have a complaint, who should I speak to?
All complaints should be directed to Alex Stobart, The Programme Director for Enterprising Scotland. He can be emailed on astobart@enterprisingscotland.co.uk, or if the matter is urgent, he can be contacted on 07595 508 625.
If I am not happy with the response from Enterprising Scotland regarding my complaint, what do I do?
In each candidate handbook, there is a list of procedures that should be followed for any complaint. If you have followed the appropriate action in relation to your complaint, then you may escalate the matter to the Chartered Management Institute.
